Thailand frees 58 Cambodian illegal loggers: spokesman

Xinhua, September 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Thailand had released 58 Cambodians who had been detained for illegally logging in a national park in northeast Thailand's Nakhon Ratchasima province, a Cambodian spokesman said Tuesday.

"Following the intervention by the Cambodian Embassy (officials) to Thailand, the Thai authority freed 58 out of 92 Cambodians, who had been imprisoned in Nakhon Ratchasima province for illegally logging in a national park in the province, on Sept. 11," foreign ministry spokesman Chum Sounry said in a statement.

He said they were fined 4,250 Thai Baht (118 U.S. dollars) each by the Thai authority.

According to the spokesman, the group was cheated by ringleaders who promised to provide them legal jobs with the wage of 1,000 Thai Baht (28 U.S. dollars) per day, but finally ended up working as illegal loggers. Endi
