3 parties in Denmark's Faroe Islands reach agreement to form ruling coalition: media

Three political parties in Denmark's Faroe Islands have reached an agreement to form a ruling coalition, local media reported on Monday.

The new Faroese government coalition consists of the Social Democratic Party, the Republican Party and the Progress Party, according to the Danish news agency Ritzau.

Aksel V. Johannesen, leader of Social Democratic Party, will become the new prime minister of Faroe Islands, Ritzau cited the Faroese newspaper Nordlyset as reporting.

The three parties together gained 52.8 percent of the total votes in the 2015 election, held on Sept. 1, winning 17 seats in the 33-seat parliament.

In the election, the Social Democrats leader was the biggest winner with 2,405 individual votes, while the then Prime Minister Kaj Leo Johannesen only managed to harvest 603 individual votes.

Faroe Islands, comprising 18 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, have some 49,000 inhabitants. The archipelago enjoys extensive autonomy, but Denmark maintains control over its foreign and defense affairs.

The Danish government subsidizes Faroe Islands' economy with around 650 million kroner (about 98.5 million U.S. dollars) a year. Endit
