Africa's top seed, All Africa Games champion to face off in Kampala Badminton Open

Africa's top seed and 2015 All Africa Games badminton champion will face off in the 2015 Kampala International Open Championship slated for Sept. 17-20.

South Africa's Jacob Maliekal, who won gold at the 2015 All Africa Games last week, will face Uganda's Edwin Ekiring who is also Africa's top seed.

The Kampala International Badminton Open mainly attract local players with Maliekal being the only foreign entrant.

Maliekal told Xinhua that he is in good form for the Kampala event.

The South African said he is hungry to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games and must garner more points from several tournaments around the world.

"After settling for a bronze medal at the All Africa games, I hope I can win the event in Uganda and get more ranking points to improve my world rankings," the Ugandan who plays in Netherlands told Xinhua.

Simon Mugabi, the Uganda Badminton Association Chief Executive Officer said the event has been sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) as a Futures event to have 1,700 points.

The women's category will be more of a local affair as Shamim Bangi is eager to win and improve her BWF ranking.

Bangi who is ranked third in Africa won all her singles games in the team events of the All Africa Games before falling in the first round of the individual category. Endi
