Cristiano Ronaldo produced the week in the Spanish BBVA Primera Liga as he scored five goals in Real Madrid's 6-0 win away to Espanyol.

The Portuguese striker, who was ably assisted by Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema, opened the scoring in the seventh minute, before netting another four in a game Real Madrid were leading 4-0 after just 28 minutes.

Karim Benzema scored Real Madrid's other goal, while Bale provided three assists in a match where Real Madrid also kept a clean sheet for the third game in succession, as well as netting 11 goals in their last two matches.

Leo Messi celebrated the birth of his second child on Friday with a goal that gave FC Barcelona a vital win over Atletico Madrid in the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

The Argentinean striker had started the game on the bench as a result of tiredness, once again stole the show and assured three points against an in-form Atletico Madrid with a trademark finish with less than 15 minutes remaining in their tightly fought game in the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

Fernando Torres had put Atletico ahead early in the second half, only for a Neymar free kick to draw the scores level shortly afterwards.

Barca were the better side in the first 45 minutes against a rival that seemed to lack ambition, but Atletico showed more bite after the break.

Villlarreal also showed they mean business as they defeated Granada 3-1 away from home. Manu Trigueros opened the scoring in the 48th minute and Bakambu doubled the lead three minutes later.

Fran Rico gave home fans some hope with just over a quarter of an hour remaining, but Samu Garcia's first goal for Villarreal in injury time assured the points went back to the east coast

New signing Raul Garcia wasted little time in getting on the scoresheet for Athletic Club Bilbao in his debut against Getafe. The former Atletico Madrid midfielder scored a looping header to put his side 2-0 ahead after Aritz Aduriz had already opened the scoring.

Aduriz's second of the game confirmed the win after a shot from Velazquez had given Getafe hope with 15 minutes remaining.

A win for Celta Vigo at home to Las Palmas would have taken them top of the table and they Galicians looked well on course when they quickly went 2-0 ahead while their rivals were reduced to 10 men after goalkeeper Javi Varas was sent off. Fabian Orellana and Daniel Wasss cored early goals and although Araujo scored for Las Palmas in the 23rd minute there looked to be no way back for them after Nolito made it 3-1 in the 48th minute.

Nevertheless, and own goal and a strike from Daniel Simon gave Las Palmas a heroic point to take back to the Canary Islands.

Eibar could also have gone top but drew 0-0 away to Malaga, who are another side who have yet to score this season.

A solitary goal from Ruben Castro gave Betis a 1-0 win at home to Real Sociedad who have not scored in their first three games of the season, despite playing for 45 minutes against 10 men after Betis had Petros sent off for a second yellow card just before the break.

Valencia also took all three points, thanks to a Paco Alcacer goal in the 91st minute which decided an open match away to Sporting Gijon.

The weekend kicked off on Friday night as Levante and Sevilla drew 1-1 in the Ciudad de Valencia stadium. Endi
