Degenkolb grabs consolation win but Vuelta glory goes to Aru

Xinhua, September 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

Fabio Aru of the Astana cycling team was crowned as the winner of the 75th Vuelta de Espana (Tour of Spain) cycle race in Madrid on Sunday.

The Italian finished in the group behind stage winner John Degenkolb who won the final sprint of the race in the heart of the Spanish capital, with Joaquin Rodriguez finishing second overall and Rafael Majka third.

Aru made the decisive move to the title on Saturday on the final mountain stage of what was an incredibly testing race.

Trailing Tom Domoulin by five seconds, he and his team-mates were able to leave Dumoulin exposed without companions from his Giant-Alpacin team and the Dutchman, who had done incredibly well to maintain his lead until the penultimate stage, saw his strength escape him, leaving him over three minutes adrift.

With the destiny of the winner's jersey decided on Saturday, Sunday's short last stage began as a procession into the capital, before the sprinters' teams went to work in the 14 laps of the city center.

There Giant-Alpecin did their job and Degenkolb, who has now won 10 stages in Spain was first over the line to take away some of Saturday's hurt for his teammates, but the overall glory was for Aru. Endi
