Uganda's boxer Katende wins All Africa Games bronze medal

Xinhua, September 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Uganda picked her second bronze medal at the on-going All Africa Games in Congo after Kennedy Katende lost to an Algerian fighter in the semifinals of the heavy weight category on Saturday.

Katende's bronze medal followed badminton star Edwin Ekiring's medal he won two days ago after losing in the semifinals of the men's singles to a South African player.

"I am happy that out of the seven boxers who came for these Games I have managed to get a medal. I fought against an experienced opponent," Katende told Xinhua after the fight.

It was always going to be a hard fight for Katende against Benchelba Abdelhafid who is a two-time Olympics quarterfinalist. The Algerian showed confidence as he forced Katende to the defensive most of the time.

According to the rules of the All Africa Games since there are no third-place playoffs so both losing semifinalists win bronze medals except in sports where the top three places are usually clear, for instance athletics.

Uganda now moved to 20th position with Mali with two bronze medals as Egypt continued to dominate the medal table with 130 medals and South Africa in second place. Endi
