New Chairman of Myanmar's ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) U Htay Oo said on Saturday that the party's objective is stability and development of the country.
In an exclusive interview with Xinhua, U Htay Oo said President U Thein Sein's efforts made in settling domestic armed conflict, realizing lasting peace and developing economy are aimed at achieving stability, peace and development of the country.
Briefing on USDP's status, U Htay Oo said the party would pursue for the country a path of multi-party democracy and adopt a market-oriented economic system.
He highlighted that USDP is a winning party in the 2010 general election with its chairman being elected as the country's president. The government under the leadership of U Thein Sein had brought about remarkable change of the country in the past few years.
The obvious change he cited is the change in international relations, saying that the friendly relations between Myanmar and neighboring countries has been maintained, and its ties with those countries that had imposed sanctions on Myanmar improved, pushing forward economic development.
The new party leader also referred to the opening up of media sector, saying that media now has much more freedom compared with the past.
He attributed the most outstanding change in realizing domestic peace to the efforts of the government under the leadership of President U Thein Sein.
With the foundation already formed for lasting peace, Myanmar's nationwide ceasefire accord is expected to be signed soon, he said.
Speaking of the upcoming general election, U Htay Oo stressed the importance of holding the election in a free and fair manner to continue the path to democracy.
He disclosed that the party would nominate a total of 1,130 candidates to contest the nationwide election. Of them 318 for seats of the House of Representatives (Lower House), 164 for seats of the House of Nationalities (Upper House), 619 for seats of Region or State Parliament and 29 for Representatives of National Races.
He added that USDP would not compete in the self-administered zones of ethnic nationalities as an encouragement for them to administer the affairs of themselves.
U Htay Oo is reportedly to run in the Nov. 8 general election in Hinthada township constituency in Ayeyawaddy region.
According to the commission's figures so far available, of the 1,171 constituencies designated for the vote at four levels of the parliament across the country, 330 constituencies will be contested for the Lower House, 168 for the Upper House, 644 for the region or state parliament and 29 for national race representatives.
