Rahul Gandhi slams Indian PM over farmers' plight

India's main opposition Congress party's second-in-command Rahul Gandhi Saturday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for talking about democracy but forgetting the plight of farmers in the country.

"Modi talks about democracy but does not talk about our farmers and laborers, who run this democracy. He forgets them," the Congress vice president said during an interaction with a group of nearly 400 farmers in the national capital.

Gandhi hailed his party's success for not letting the Indian government pass the controversial land bill in the parliament. " This is the victory of Congress. But it is the victory of farmers as well," he said.

The Indian government had twice passed the bill through an ordinance, but did not get it approved from the parliament as mandated under the Indian constitution, and was finally forced to let the bill lapsed because of stiff resistance from the opposition parties. Endi
