Singapore's election results reflect will of people: PM

Xinhua, September 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Saturday that the results of the general election "reflect the will of the people," as his People's Action Party (PAP) secured a landslide victory, gaining 83 of the 89 parliamentary seats.

Lee, who is also the Secretary-General of PAP, thanked citizens for their strong support, saying the election results show that Singaporeans have rejected divisive politics and support rational approaches to solving the nation's problems in an open letter to Singaporeans.

The ruling PAP received 69.86 percent of the popular vote, an increase of almost 10 percentage points from its share in 2011. Lee said it is time for Singaporeans to unite and work together with the hustings over.

Lee said the government will continue on "the new way forward", more inclusive focus on social needs, especially for the elderly and the disadvantaged, and more involvement by citizens. He also mentioned that the election was a major step forward for the PAP's leadership renewal.

While the opposition Workers' Party (WP) Secretary-General Low Thia Khiang said WP have run a good campaign, as the WP team have done their best and presented the best candidates to the voters after the results of the general election released.

WP retained six seats in the parliament by winning Hougang SMC and Aljunied GRC, in which votes were recounted.

Low congratulated the PAP on its "strong mandate", and he also hoped the ruling party would think about building trust between citizens and national institutions such as the civil service, judiciary and media, as this is important to the future of Singapore. Endi
