Belarus verifies four candidates eligible for presidential election in October

Belarus Central Election Commission on Thursday announced registration of four candidates eligible for competing in the presidential election slated for Oct. 11.

The four eligible presidential candidates are Sergei Gaidukevich, Tatiana Korotkevich, Nikolai Ulakhovich, as well as the incumbent President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.

The Central Election Commission said all the four have won candidacy after they have met the requirement of garnering signatures of more than 100,000 people.

It will the fifth time for Alexander Lukashenko, the current president of Belarus, to run for president.

Sergei Gaidukevich, a four-time presidential candidate, is chairman of the Belarusian Liberal-Democratic Party; Nikolai Ulakhovich, who leads a group called Belarusian Cossacks in addition to the Belarusian Patriotic Party; Tatiana Korotkevich is an activist of the civil campaign Speak the Truth!.

Only a Belarusian citizen (by birth) over 35 years of age who has been living in Belarus for the last 10 years will be eligible for presidential candidacy in the country. Endit
