Stoltenberg recognizes Slovakia's part in collective security

Slovakia is a responsible ally that contributes to collective security, confirmed NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg after meeting with Slovak Defense Minister Martin Glvac here on Thursday.

Glvac reaffirmed Slovakia's adherence to the goals it committed to at the NATO summit in Wales last year. They included halting the drop in defense expenses, increasing spending toward the sector to 1.6 percent of GDP by 2020, and allocating 20 percent of defense expenses towards the modernization of the armed forces.

"We'll get to 1.1 percent of GDP this year thanks to our modernization projects, be they new helicopters or others scheduled for later this year," stressed Glvac.

Next year's budget envisages the largest increase in spending on the Slovak defense ministry from among all ministries.

Stoltenberg praised Slovakia for delivering on its commitments, including with respect to the situation in Ukraine. Endit
