Portugal calls on Guinean political actors to reach compromise amid crisis

The Portuguese government is closely following the development of crisis-hit Guinea Bissau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement sent to local media on Thursday, calling for the country to reach a political compromise.

"Taking into account the context of institutional fragility that has affected Guinea Bissau, in the recent past, the high democratic maturity shown by the population and the Guinean institutions must be pointed out," the statement read.

"The government is calling for all Guinean political actors to intensify their dialogue to find a political compromise in the short-term," the statement added.

Guinea Bissau President Jose Mario Vaz last month appointed ex-minister Baciro Dja as the country's new prime minister, replacing Domingos Simoes Pereira, who had been sacked.

However, Dja handed in his resignation after 20 days in the post, a decision that came after the Supreme Court ruled his appointment was unconstitutional. Enditem
