S. African minister urges EU to review migration policy

Xinhua, September 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

South Africa's Minister of Home Affairs Maluci Gigaba on Thursday urged the European Union (EU) to take a more humane approach to replace its current "disastrous" migration policy.

"We think Europe should approach this (the influx of refugees) as a region, rather than individual countries fighting among (themselves)," Gigaba told reporters in Cape Town.

Gigaba criticized certain EU countries of trying to shut down borders, threatening to send sniffer dogs and erecting fences, instead of taking a more constructive approach.

He stressed the need to involve a constructive dialogue with Africa and the Middle East in order to deal with the source of the recent spate of movements of people.

Thousands of migrants mainly from Syrian pushed north through Europe in recent days, posing a big challenge to European countries.

Some countries suspended rail links and highways trying to bring the influx of refugees under control, which has been under fire for being not "humane" to refugees. Endit
