EU, UN officials discuss future step to end Syria conflict

Xinhua, September 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

European Union (EU) foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini here on Thursday met with United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura to discuss the next steps toward putting an end to the conflict in Syria.

According to a press release issued by the European External Action Service, Mogherini and De Mistura shared views on how to accelerate the process to find a political solution, as the crisis, now the world's largest humanitarian crisis, enters its fifth year.

The two discussed the best ways in which the EU could further actively contribute to UN initiatives, including the UN Special Envoy's proposal for working groups on Syria, and the establishment of an international contact group.

They also discussed the new regional perspectives on the Iran nuclear program and how to effectively counter the terrorist threat posed by the so-called Islamic State (Daesh) in the region. Endit
