Trinidad and Tobago's People's National Movement (PNM) leader Keith Rowley was sworn in Wednesday as the country's new prime minister by President Anthony Carmona in a ceremony held here.

Rowley and his PNM defeated Kamla Persad-Bissessar of the People's Partnership during the general election on Monday, winning 23 seats in the 41-seat parliament.

At the ceremony, Faris Al-Rawi, member of the House of Representatives for San Fernando West, was also sworn in as the new Attorney General.

Rowley, who is married with two daughters, was born on Oct. 24, 1949 in Tobago.

He first served in parliament as an opposition senator during 1987-1990, and later served successively as minister of agriculture, lands and marine resources, minister of planning and development, minister of housing and minister of trade and industry.

He has served as the representative for the district of Diego Martin West since 1991.

Following PNM's defeat in the 2010 general election, Rowley was appointed leader of the opposition until his victory this week. Endit
