Dumoulin back in red after time trial victory in Vuelta

Xinhua, September 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Tom Dumoulin fulfilled expectations when he won the 17th stage of the Vuelta de Espana (Tour of Spain) cycle race on Wednesday to retake the overall leadership of the race.

Overnight leader, Joaquin Rodriguez had commented on Monday that he thought the Dutchman was the man to fear in the 38.7 kilometer time trial around Burgos and the Spaniard's works turned out to be correct as Dumoulin took the stage with an impressive time of 46 minutes and one second.

That was enough to give him a three second advantage in the overall classification over Fabio Aru, who finished the stage 1 minute and 53 seconds behind.

However, Rodriguez, who is built for climbing mountains rather than time trialing, lost over 3 minutes on the day and although he is in third place, he is now 1.15 off the lead.

Both Rodriguez and Aru will think they still have a chance if Dumoulin suffers over the next three days, all of which include some serious climbing, with Saturday's stage including four first category climbs, but the fact none of those stages actually includes a hilltop finish will increase Dumoulin's chances of keeping the red jersey into Madrid on Sunday.
