109 people lost their lives on Swiss roads in the first six months of this year, seven fewer than the number of fatalities over the same period in 2014, the Swiss Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) indicated on Wednesday.
Representing a 6 percent decrease, figures show that an additional 1,655 individuals were seriously injured in road accidents in 2015's first semester, 350 fewer than the amount for last year's first half.
A significant reduction in deaths was observed for those travelling in private cars, with figures showing that this year's first half saw a 31 percent reduction in the number of fatalities recorded for passengers using this mode of transport.
While the number of injuries incurred by pedestrians decreased from 336 in 2014's first semester to 252 for the same period this year, the number of deaths rose from 15 last year to 23 in 2015.
FEDRO indicated that two thirds of these fatalities were aged 65 or above, and that one third died on zebra crossings.
Though the number of motorcyclist deaths has remained stable, FEDRO reported a slight decrease (minus 7 percent) in the number of cyclist deaths.
FEDRO further highlighted that Swiss motorways have been registering positive safety trends since four years now, with this year's casualty rate showing a 29 percent drop compared to a year ago. Endit
