PLO parliament meeting to elect chair postponed: speaker

Xinhua, September 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) decided on Wednesday to postpone a meeting to elect a new chairman after President Mahmoud Abbas' resignation, according to a speaker.

Salim Za'noon, speaker of the Palestinian National Council (PNC), the PLO parliament in exile, announced that the PNC meeting scheduled for Sept. 14 has been postponed. The new date is yet to be decided.

Earlier Tuesday, Abbas resigned as the Chair of the PLO executive committee, along with the resignation of nine additional committee members.

The PNC was previously scheduled to hold a two-day regular session on Sept. 14 in the West Bank city of Ramallah to elect a new chairman and new PLO executive committee members.

The Islamic Hamas movement, however, on Wednesday called on Palestinian factions to boycott the meeting, saying it did not coordinate with the Islamic movement that has been ruling the Gaza Strip since 2007.

Following a letter from 14 members of the PLO executive committee asking to put off the meeting, Abbas has agreed to postpone it until the end of this year.

According to Za'noon, it's necessary to give the opportunity to other Palestinian factions to join the PLO, which is the sole and legitimate representative of all the Palestinians, before such an election meeting could take place. Endit
