Unbeaten Mexico, Argentina reach semis at FIBA Americas Championship

Xinhua, September 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Mexico and Argentina, both unbeaten, will play semifinals at FIBA (International Basketball Federation) 2015 Americas Championship currently held in Mexico City, local press reported Tuesday.

On Monday night, Mexico claimed a hard-fought victory against Venezuela with a close score of 73-70, while Argentina defeated Panama 84-57.

In the last quarter, Mexico came from behind and in the last five minutes Mexican Hector Hernandez scored to tie the match 63-63.

In the last seconds, Jorge Gutierrez, Mexican player of NBA Milwaukee Bucks, scored to give Mexico its sixth victory. Gutierrez was the hero of the game with 20 points.

The other Mexican star, Gustavo Ayon, scored 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Mexico is close to get its first ticket to Olympic Games since Montreal1976.

Mexico's coach Sergio Valdeolmillos said the Mexican squad will try its best to win the semifinal against Canada on Tuesday. "We have to be smart and know our real possibilities. We know how to play even when we are above in the score," said Valdeolmillos.

Meanwhile, Argentina defeated Panama and also remained unbeaten. Luis Scola was again the Argentine star scoring 16 points, while Andres Nocioni scored 10. Endi
