Australian consumer confidence falls amid international uncertainty

Xinhua, September 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Australian consumer confidence has been hit hard due to turmoil in financial markets and worries about the international economy.

The Westpac/Melbourne Institute index showed consumer sentiment fell by 5.6 percent so far in September to 93.9 points, well below 100 points to reveal there are more pessimists about the Australian economy than optimists.

Westpac chief economist Bill Evans said the solid fall was unsurprising considering the recent spate of weak economic news and heavy falls on global financial markets.

"This heightened concern around the world economy unnerved respondents about the labor market," he said in a statement. Endi
