Peña Nieto asks new ambassador to U.S. to defend rights of Mexicans

Xinhua, September 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has asked the new Mexican ambassador to the U.S., Miguel Basanez Ebergenyi, to "defend the national interest and the rights of Mexicans in the country," according to the president's office.

In a meeting late on Monday, the Mexican head of state tasked Basanez Ebergenyi with "consolidating the strategic bilateral relation" in a "close and constructive" way.

He also instructed the ambassador to focus on specific aspects of the complex agenda existing between the two countries, such as issues relating to education, energy and entrepreneurship.

In response, Basanez Ebergenyi reiterated his pledge to show that Mexico is a player with global reach that wishes to work with the U.S. to make the region more dynamic and competitive.

On Sept. 2, the Mexican Senate ratified Basanez Ebergenyi to take over as ambassador from Eduardo Medina Mora, who resigned his position to become a Justice on the Mexican Supreme Court. Endit
