Jordan reported on Tuesday a new fatality of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus infection, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

The case for a man in his early 50s was the fifth death reported in Jordan since the beginning of this year, Mohammad Abdullat, head of communicable diseases department at the Health Ministry, said in a statement.

The new fatality increase the number of overall cases registered in Jordan since 2012 to 19, he said.

The MERS outbreak has caused panic throughout the region over the past few years, prompting many governments to launch awareness campaigns and precautionary measures in an effort to prevent the spread of the virus.

MERS is a viral respiratory disease caused by a novel coronavirus that was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012.

Typical MERS symptoms include fever, cough and shortness of breath, and approximately 36 percent of reported patients with MERS have died, according to the World Health Organization. Endit
