Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III said Tuesday that he remains hopeful that Malaysia's help in the peace process in Mindanao will continue despite protest against Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is under pressure from allegations over fund embezzlement.
Aquino acknowledged the assistance that Najib's administration has done for the peace talk between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the largest Muslim rebel group in the country.
"What I know for a fact now is that we have Prime Minister Najib (Razak) who has been very instrumental ever since I got into this office in moving this peace dialogue forward and we hope that this policy of Malaysia doesn't change of being really of tremendous help in resolving this long, long problem that has been festering since the late 60's," he said in an interview aired live over a state-owned television station.
A peace pact has been signed between the Philippine government and the MILF through Malaysia's facilitation.
Aquino said he has not yet gotten in touch with Najib recently, except in formal meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Endi
