133 Spanish bankers earned over 1 mln euros in 2013: study

Xinhua, September 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

A study published on Tuesday by the European Banking Authority (EBA) shows 133 Spanish bankers earned over 1 million euros (1.1 million U.S. dollars) in 2013.

That represents a 33 percent rise on the 2012 figure, despite the country then paying back a European Union bailout of its banking system and working to recapitalize its banks whose weaknesses had been exposed by the recession.

Spain ranks fifth in Europe in the number of banking executives who earn in excess of 1 million euros a year, the study showed.

EBA data showed that the vast majority of the 133 banking millionaires were in fact earning a great deal more than a million euros a year, with 52 earning between 1 and 2 million euros and 81 earning over 2 million euros a year.

Of those 81, 64 had earnings of between 2 to 3 million euros, nine earned between 3 to 4 million euros and three bringing in between 5 and 6 million euros.

In total they earned 290.3 million euros, of which 102.8 million euros was in fixed earnings while the remaining 187.6 million euros was in variables and bonuses.

In contrast, 2013 saw 67,189 evictions of families who were able to keep up mortgage repayments as a result of the crisis. Endit
