Malta celebrates Victory Day

Xinhua, September 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca laid flowers on the Great Siege Monument here as the archipelago celebrates one of Malta's most important historical days - Victory Day.

Falls on Sept. 8 every year, Victory Day is a National Day as the date commemorates the end of the Great Siege in 1565, the end of the French occupation of Malta in 1800 and the fall of the Fascist regime in Italy in 1943.

The monument commemorating the Great Siege of 1565, an Antonio Sciortino masterpiece, was the focus of a conservation initiative which aimed to preserve this major Valletta landmark for future generations. This well-known sculpture was installed in 1927 and consists of a granite base with three bronze figures above.

The traditional regatta featuring boat races in the Grand Harbor is also held on Victory Day. Endit
