Profile: Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz

Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz will pay a state visit to China from Sept. 9 to Sept. 16 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Aziz will attend the opening ceremony of the China-Arab States Expo to be held in Yinchuan, capital of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in northwest China, from Sept. 10 to Sept. 13.

Aziz was born in Akjoujt, north of the capital Nouakchott, on Dec. 20, 1956.

He joined the armed forces in 1977 and attended a military academy in Morocco before rising through the ranks of the army. He was promoted as the army general in 2008.

In August he was named the president of the High Council of State.

He was elected as president of Mauritania in July 2009 and re-elected in June 2014.

Aziz attended the second China-Arab States Economic and Trade Forum held from Sept. 21 to Sept. 25, 2011 in Yinchuan, and visited Beijing and Anhui province. Endit
