Lufthansa pilots to strike on Tuesday

Xinhua, September 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Pilots at German airline Lufthansa's cargo and long-haul service will strike on Tuesday following a recent failure of talks over retirement and benefits, a pilots' union said Monday.

The union, Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), said Lufthansa pilots flying all long-haul flights leaving Germany would strike from 0600 GMT in the morning to 2159 GMT on Tuesday. Cargo flights pilots would also walkout during the period.

The new strike is the 13th one since April 2014 in a long-lasting dispute over retirement scheme between pilots and the company.

Lufthansa, facing competition from budget airlines, is struggling to cut operating costs. It wishes to scrap a retirement arrangement under which pilots retire at 55 and receive 60 percent of their salary until they reach the statutory retirement age of 65.

In a statement on Monday, the VC union said the latest negotiations last week made no progress despite "far-reaching concessions" from pilots. Endit
