Striker Willian scored four goals to fire defending champions Cruzeiro to a 5-1 victory over Figueirense in Brazil's Serie A championship on Sunday.

The 28-year-old struck twice either side of halftime while Vinicius Araujo was also on target for the hosts. Marquinhos Pedroso pulled a late goal back for Figueirense.

The match was Cruzeiro's first under former Brazil coach Mano Menezes, who replaced Vanderlei Luxemburgo last week after a poor run of form.

The result at Belo Horizonte's Mineirao stadium lifted Cruzeiro to 13th in the standings with 28 points while Figueirense dropped to 15th, two points further back.

In other matches on Sunday, Ponte Peta drew 0-0 at Chapecoense, hosts Gremio beat Goias 1-0, Coritiba won 2-0 at Avai, Flamengo beat Fluminense 3-1 in their Rio derby, Santos drew 1-1 at Sport while Sao Paulo rivals Palmeiras and Corinthians drew 3-3. Endi
