Rodriguez on fire in Vuelta stage 15

Xinhua, September 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) moved into just one second of the lead in the Vuelta de Espana (Tour of Spain) cycle race on Sunday when he won the 15th stage of the 3-week long cycle race.

Although Rodriguez finished just 15 seconds ahead of red jersey wearer Fabio Aru, the time bonus for winning the stage took him to within touching distance of the overall lead.

Rodriguez launched his definitive attack two kilometers from the top of the final climb to the finish line in Alto de Sotres in Asturias and was followed over the finish line by Polish climber Rafael Majka, who also benefitted from the time bonus to overtake Tom Dumoulin in the overall classification 1.24 off the lead.

The top three will hope to use Monday's brutal mountain stage, which includes seven categorized climbs, ending with a first category and on the summit of the special category, Alto de la Hermita de Alba, to put further time into Dumoulin, given that Tuesday is the second rest day of the race and Dumoulin is in theory a much stronger time trial rider and would be expected to take a considerable chunk of time out of them on Wednesday's 38 km time trial around Burgos.
