Xinhua, September 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bangladesh's literacy rate has reached 61 percent, said an official on Sunday, two days before this year's international literacy day which falls on Sept. 8.

Speaking at a press conference, Bangladeshi Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman said the literacy rate of the country has increased substantially during the tenure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government, according to the Literacy Assessment Survey of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.

He said the government has been striving hard through a number of projects to reduce dropout rates.

Some 13 million more poor primary school pupils will come under government's Primary Education Stipend Program which is now covering around 7.8 million students, he added. Endi
