Seven sailors killed in Guinea Bissau boat accident

Xinhua, September 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Seven sailors of different nationalities died in Guinea Bissau's waters after their fishing boat capsized on Sunday, the president of Guinea Bissau's Maritime Port Institute Carlos da Silva said on Thursday.

Addressing the press in Bissau, da Silva said the vessel dubbed Dimitros, of Greek origin, sunk when the sailors were fishing in Guinea Bissau's exclusive economic zone.

He said the vessel could not withstand the strong waves and sunk with 19 sailors, out of who twelve were rescued by Guinea Bissau rescuers.

Search and rescue operations are still ongoing but according to maritime authorities, there is little hope of finding survivors. Those who perished include nationals of Senegal, Gambia, Guinea Bissau and Greece. Endit
