Sri Lanka's new government sworn in

Xinhua, September 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

A new Sri Lankan national unity government consisting of 42 ministers took oaths before President Maithripala Sirisena on Friday after parliamentary approval was obtained to appoint more ministers than the 30 approved by the country's constitution.

Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera took oaths earlier.

Sri Lanka's new cabinet thus consists of 43 ministers, 42 of whom officially began work on Friday.

Sri Lanka's ruling United National Party (UNP) led by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, which won a parliamentary election on August 17, agreed to join hands with the opposition United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) to form a national government in the island nation and work together in parliament for the next two years.
