At least 42 passengers have been injured after four coaches of an express train derailed in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Friday, a police official said.

"The mishap happened in the state's Cuddalore district around 2: 30 a.m. local time. Four coaches of the Chennai Egmore-Mangalore Express derailed, injuring 42 passengers," he said, on condition of anonymity.

All the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital where the condition of three are said to be serious, the official said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official added. Endi
