U.S. stocks open higher amid mixed data

Xinhua, September 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

U.S. stocks opened higher on Thursday as investors meditated on mixed economic reports.

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 51.04 points, or 0.31 percent, to 16,402.42. The S&P 500 increased 6.30 points, or 0.32 percent, to 1,955.16. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 9.84 points, or 0.21 percent, to 4,759.82.

The United States' international trade deficit in goods and services decreased to 41.9 billion U.S. dollars in July from 45.2 billion dollars in June, largely in line with market consensus, the Commerce Department reported Thursday.

Meanwhile, in the week ending Aug. 29, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial jobless claims increased 12,000 from the previous week's revised level to 282,000, exceeding market estimates of 273,000, said the U.S. Labor Department Thursday.

Some analysts thought that recent relatively soft jobs data could give the Federal Reserve an excuse to postpone rate hikes.

On Wednesday, U.S. stocks rebounded strongly following the deep decline of the previous session, as Wall Street assessed the Federal Reserve's Beige Book amid mixed data. Endi
