France's power utility EDF on Thursday announced the EPR (European Pressurised Reactor), a third-generation reactor, would start working during the last three months of 2018.

"The new roadmap, to which EDF and its partners are committed, aims to optimise the management of the project (with) first fuel loading and start-up of the reactor in the fourth quarter of 2018," it said.

In a press release, EDF planned to finalize primary circuit mechanical erection the first quarter of 2016. A year after, the company scheduled to complete electro mechanical erection to be completed and system performance testing.

According to French utility company, the EPR is "the most powerful in the world at 1650 MW, and the most advanced in terms of nuclear safety and performance."

First major constructions began by the end of 2007 with the project 's total cost revised up to 10.5 billion euros (11.8 billion U.S. dollars).

"I have reviewed the Flamanville EPR project in detail, and I am absolutely confident that it will be a success," said Jean-Bernard Levy, EDF Chairman and Managing Director.

"Our teams and those of our partners, particularly AREVA, are working to complete this project together in compliance with the most stringent nuclear and industrial safety standards. Together with renewable energies, new nuclear build is an asset for successful energy transition to which EDF is fully committed," he added. (1 euro = 1.123 U.S. dollar) Endit
