Macao holds ceremony to mark 70 anniv. of V-Day

Macao hosted a commemorative ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of victory of the Chinese people's resistance against Japanese aggression and world anti-Fascist war at Tap Seac Square on Thursday.
About 440 representatives from all walks of life attended the ceremony, which included a flag raising, playing and singing of National Anthem, laying wreath, silence tribute ceremony and revolutionary songs performance by members of the Women's General Association of Macao and the Kao Yip Middle School.
Macao people's donation to the resistance effort during the anti-Japanese war fully demonstrated the tradition of patriotism, Secretary for Security, Wong Sio Chak said when presiding over the ceremony, noting that the young generation would learn from history, prevent war history from repeating, and treasure the stable social environment.
Under the "one country, two systems" formula and the full support from the mainland, Macao had achieved unprecedented social and economic development since its return to China, Wong said, urging the public to seize opportunities, pushing forward the progress of the region.
The commemorative activities reminded people of the suffering and humiliation during the wartime, and encouraged people to honor the martyrs and cherish peace, community representative Tong Chi Kin said at the ceremony.
Young students should always remember the selfless dedication of the older generations, and treasure the hard-won peace, youth representative Leong Chi Hou said in his speech.
After the ceremony, the military parade held at Beijing's Tiananmen Square was given a live broadcast.
"The V-Day parade demonstrated an independent, self-reliant and confident China to the world. I am proud of the country," Ms Lin said excitedly when watching the live show through the large screen arranged at Senado Square in the center of Macao.
Locals, people from mainland and Hong Kong have been queuing outside Macao Post from 6 o'clock to buy commemorative stamps, which are on sale starting from Thursday. Endi
