New car sales in New Zealand heading for annual record

Xinhua, September 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Sales of new cars in New Zealand continued to defy other economic indicators last month, rising by 10 percent from August last year, the Motor Industry Association ( MIA) said Wednesday.

Passenger car sales of 7,752 in August were up 9.4 percent year on year, making it the strongest month of August since 1986, MIA president John Manley said in a statement.

New commercial vehicle registrations of 3,440 vehicles in August were up 10.8 percent year on year.

Total new car sales of 87,105 in the year to the end of August were up 5 percent on the same time last year.

"Given the year-to-date sales position it is likely the industry will break the 130,000 unit barrier in 2015 for the first time ever," said Manley.

Toyota remained the overall market leader for the month of August with 21 percent market share, followed by Ford with 11 percent and Holden with 9 percent. Endi
