Uganda drops women's basketball team for 2015 All Africa Games

Xinhua, September 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Uganda has dropped its women's basketball team ahead of the 2015 All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville because of financial constraints.

Nicholas Muramagi, assistant secretary general of the National Council of Sports, told Xinhua on Tuesday that it is unfortunate they have had to drop the 15 women's basketball team and two youth players who were traveling for a training camp.

"This was out of our means because the money we got from the government was not enough," he said.

The Uganda women's basketball team "Gazelles" qualified for the Games during the Federation of International Basketball Association Africa Zone 5 qualifiers held in Kampala, Uganda.

The Uganda Gazelles will now wait to take part in the AfroBasket Women 2015 championship to take place in Cameroon from Sept. 24 to Oct. 4.

Last weekend Uganda's first batch of badminton players and seven boxers traveled to Congo Brazzaville. The rest of the athletes will travel in two more batches.

Uganda will also field a team for athletics, tennis, swimming, table tennis, cycling, weightlifting and paralympics for the Games that run Sept.4-19. Endit
