Slovakia criticizes countries on outer Schengen border over "open-armed" migrant policy

Xinhua, August 31, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Slovak government is to press European Union (EU) countries on the external Schengen border to carry out their duties properly and not open the borders to everybody, said Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on Monday.

"We're ready to cooperate at the level of the police corps when it comes to the protection of the internal Schengen area," said Fico after an extraordinary meeting of the country's security council.

The prime minister reiterated that Slovakia rejected the introduction of mandatory quotas for distributing immigrants among individual EU countries. However, Fico did say Slovakia was ready to help people whose lives and health were in danger.

"But we won't assist in this folly with arms open wide with the notion that we'll accept them all regardless of whether they're economic migrants or not," stressed Fico, adding that economic migrants should be returned to their countries of origin. Endit
