Ethiopian Dibaba wins women's marathon title at Beijing worlds

Xinhua, August 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ethiopia's Mare Dibaba won the women's marathon title at the world athletics championships in Beijing on Sunday.

Under a cool weather condition on the final matchday of the championships, Dibaba clocked 2 hours, 27 minutes and 35 seconds for the country's first women's marathon world title.

Kenya's Helah Kiprop took silver at 2:27:36 while Asian Games champion Eunice Kirwa from Bahrain was third at 2:27:39.

Traditionally strong Kenyans and Ethiopians started to break away from the leading group at the point of 34km and did not make their final sprint until reaching the Bird's Nest.

Twice defending champion, Kenya's Edna Kiplagat, was fifth, falling short of making history by becoming the first athlete, man or woman, to win three marathon world titles.

Chinese runner Ding Changqin, who won the national champion earlier this year in a personal best of 2:26:54, finished 16th. Endi
