Tokyo shares surge over 3 pct on better global economy outlook

Tokyo shares ended the trading Friday sharply higher with its benchmark Nikkei stocks index recovering 19,000 threshold as sentiment here was boosted by positive U.S. economic data and gains on overnight global markets.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average soared 561.88 points, or 3. 03 percent, from Thursday at 19,136.32.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange surged 49.39 points, or 3.29 percent, to 1, 549.80.

Gainers were led by nonferrous metal, steel and mining issues.

The turnover was about 3,094.1 billion yen (about 25.58 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
