SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) - - Unidentified gunmen shot dead a 30 -year-old youth in Indian- controlled Kashmir, police said Wednesday.

The youth believed to be a former militant was fired upon at his locality in Khandipora village of Awantipora in Pulwama district, about 33 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Unidentified gunmen Tuesday night barged inside the house of Javid Ahmad Khan and killed him on spot," a police official said. "Khan was a former militant turned pro-India National Conference ( NC) worker."

Locals said they heard volley of bullets being fired in the neighbourhood."After hearing gunshots, we came out and found Khan lying in pool of blood," Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat, a local said. " Khan had died on spot."Following the killing, police and military contingents rushed to the village and cordoned off whole area.

Reports said the slain youth was a teacher at a local college in Awantipora town.Wednesday morning Khan's relatives and neighbours participated in his funeral prayers and buried him in the village graveyard.

Police suspect hand of local militants into the killing.

According to police no arrests were made.

"We are looking into the incident and collecting vital details, " a local police officer said.

So far no militant outfit has claimed responsibility of the killing.

Militants in the region usually target families and individuals for their possible links with police and defense agencies. Even people having associations with pro-India political parties are targeted at times.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the region since 1989. Endi
