8 drown when boat sinks in southern Indian city

Xinhua, August 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Eight people drowned after the boat they were riding in was hit by another boat and broke in the southern Indian coast city of Kochi on Wednesday, said local media.

The police said the passenger motor boat was carrying over 30 passengers who were going to Vypeen island from Fort Kochi of the city when the incident took place.

"The accident took place about 100 meters from the Fort Kochi boat jetty, which is the international shipping route. Hence, even if someone is a swimmer, it's difficult to survive," said Samson, a local witness, quoted by the Indo-Asian News Service.

The Indian navy and Coast Guard swung into action and rescued around 20 people as the boat was sinking, said the report. Endi
