PNG gov't allocates more relief for worst drought in 20 years

Xinhua, August 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Papua New Guinea's government has allocated a further 25 million Kina (8.89 million U.S. dollars) for drought relief as the country comes to grips with what could amount to the worst drought in 20 years.

PNG Prime Minister Peter O'Neill toured drought and frost affected areas on Wednesday before convening the National Executive Council to approve the funds. "We are also making preparations for a potentially worsening of conditions due to an extended El Nio and the affects of climate change,"O'Neill said in a statement on Wednesday.

Drought and associated frost has destroyed food crops in PNG's agricultural region, affecting almost 2 million people.

Local media reported the United Nations is also providing support to the PNG government to assess the impact of the drought, which could engulf the entire country in a matter of months. Endi
