Morocco arrests 13 suspected of recruiting for IS

Xinhua, August 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

In a joint operation with Spain, Morocco arrested 13 people on Tuesday suspected of recruiting and sending Moroccan fighters to the ranks of the Islamic State (IS), the Interior Ministry said.

The joint operation also led to the arrest of the main partner of the cell who lives in the outskirts of Madrid, the ministry pointed out in a statement.

The Spanish Interior Ministry confirmed the news in a statement earlier today, adding that the operation was "ongoing."

The Moroccan ministry hailed the "excellent" security partnership between Moroccan and Spanish security services in the fight against terrorist threats, particularly from tension zones.

Investigations revealed the determination of the cell members to duplicate, in the kingdom, the IS experience aimed at creating a climate of fear among citizens, the ministry added.

Morocco has busted numerous IS-linked groups this year, and arrested dozens of suspects. Enditem
