Bulgarian customs find 20.4 kg of heroin at border with Turkey

Xinhua, August 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

A Bulgarian customs dog found 20.412 kg of heroin at the country's Lesovo checkpoint near the border with Turkey, officials said here Tuesday.

The golden retriever discovered the heroin on Monday in a secret compartment under the driver's seat of a Bulgaria-registered car entering from Turkey, the National Customs Agency (NCA) said in a press release.

The drug was divided into 19 packages with inscriptions in Arabic, NCA said.

Authorities estimated the value of the heroin on the black market would exceed 1.5 million U.S. dollars.

The driver of the vehicle, a Bulgarian citizen, was arrested on the scene.

Some time ago, the same customs dog named Chara found a large quantity of hashish at Lesovo checkpoint, NCA added.

Bulgaria is a key transit route for drugs smuggled from Asia to Europe. In 2014, the Balkan country seized more than 1 ton of heroin, 50 ton of marijuana, 0.1 ton of cocaine and half a ton of synthetic drugs. Endit
