An Africa-India summit will be held in October in Delhi, India, an African Union (AU) statement has said.

During his visit to the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Tuesday, India's Vice Minister of External Relations, Navtej Sarna, delivered Prime Minister Narendra Modi's invitation to the Chairperson of the AU Commission Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to attend the summit.

"The summit is looked upon with a huge amount of importance, to widen and deepen engagement with Africa," Sarna said.

It would be the first summit between the AU and Modi-led government, according to Sarna.

Dlamini-Zuma said she hoped to attend the event. "There is quite an array of complementarities, which we aim to work on together in the next four to five years, to grow the partnership," she added.

The summit is expected to focus on trade, education, training and skills development, empowerment of women and youth, and the blue economy, according to the statement. Endit
