Singapore sees slight haze due to fires in Indonesia

Xinhua, August 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

Singapore has seen a slight haze since Tuesday afternoon due to smoke from fires in Indonesia's Sumatra being blown in by the prevailing south-southwesterly winds, said the National Environment Agency on Wednesday.

As at 7 p.m. local time, the 24-hour pollutant standards index (PSI) is 62-68, which is in the moderate range, the agency said.

"Smoke plumes from hotspots in central and southern Sumatra have been observed in the past few days. 116 and 42 hotspots were detected in Sumatra on Aug. 17 and 18. Today, there were 12 hotspots in Sumatra, and the low count is due to the partial satellite pass," it said.

The 24-hour PSI is expected to be in the high-end of the moderate range but may enter the low-end of the unhealthy range if the prevailing winds continue to blow from the south or southwest, the agency said. Endi
