Security officials in Pakistan said Indian forces killed a civilian in a latest "ceasefire violation" on Tuesday.
Indian border troops fired at Char Wah sector in Sialkot district along the Working Boundary, international border between the rivals.
"Paramilitary forces, Chenab Rangers, gave a befitting response to the Indian firing," officials said, adding the exchange of firing continued overnight.
A recent escalation along the Line of Control in the disputed Kashmir region and along the Working Boundary has caused civilian casualties on both sides.
Pakistan and India accuse each other of the 2003 ceasefire violations. Guns had been relatively silent since the ceasefire; however, both sides occasionally exchange fires. An escalation has been seen in recent weeks.
In a tit-for-tat response Pakistan on Monday summoned a senior Indian diplomat and a protest was lodged over cross-border shelling that killed three civilians in two days, according to the Foreign Ministry.
India also summoned Pakistani High Commissioner in New Delhi, Abdul Basit, and a protest was lodged over the incidents, on Sunday.
Pakistan insists there have been 70 ceasefire violations from the Indian side of the LoC and the Working Boundary during the last two months.
The cross-border shelling would be one of the main items on the agenda of talks between the top security advisers who are scheduled to meet in New Delhi on August 23 and 24. They would also discuss anti-terror measures.
Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi met at Ufa, Russia, last month and agreed on the meeting of the national security advisers.
