Myanmar's lower house session resumes

Xinhua, August 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

The 12th regular session of Myanmar's House of Representatives (the lower house), which was adjourned since July 24 due to flooding, resumed in Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday.

Speaker of the lower house U Shwe Mann made his appearance by chairing the session.

An MP of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party ( USDP) submitted an important proposal calling for putting an end to the parliamentary session, giving the reason that there is plenty of work for MPs to do referring post-flood rehabilitation work, scrutiny of candidates for approaching general election and electoral canvassing.

However, U Shwe Mann disagreed with the proposal saying that those MPs, who are busy with their undertakings, can take leave and the session will go on speedily to complete discussions on some remaining bills and then the session can be stopped.

The matter will be decided in his capacity, he told the Lower House.

U Shwe Mann was removed from the party chairman post on Aug. 13 following a major reshuffle of the party leadership.

He remained as the party member but his post of parliamentary speaker is still effective.

Meanwhile, the regular session of the House of Nationalities ( the upper house) also resumed on Tuesday, turning down the same proposal as that submitted to the lower house for ending the parliamentary session. Endi
